Safer Ocean Systems Course Information

Master Limited 60 ton (Part 1, Navsafety)
This Course is approved by Transport Canada as
part of the Master Limited 60ton Certificate.
It covers the TC syllabus for 061 Navigation
Safety (Collision Regulations). 061 Navsafety
also forms part of the syllabus for other
certificates and is a good review for anyone
wishing to brush up on the Colregs.

Master Limited 60 ton (Part 2,Chartwork)
This Course is approved by Transport Canada as part of the
Master Limited 60ton Certificate. It covers the TC syllabus for
040 Chartwork. (040 chartwork also forms part of the requirements
for other certificates such as Fishing Master Class 4.)


Dates/Duration: Length of course is five days.

Marine Emergency Duties A1
This course is approved by Transport Canada. MED course is
a requirement for all persons employed on the water (before
completing 6 months of work at sea). Many employers require
the course as a condition of employment.

Marine Emergency Duties A2
This course is approved by Transport Canada and is a requirement
for all persons employed in the carriage of passengers on small
commercial vessels (before completing 6 months of work at sea).


Dates/Duration: Length of course is four days. It is generally scheduled
once a month. Includes a water session and live fire exercise.
Start dates to be announced.

Marine Emergency Duties A3
This course is approved by Transport Canada and is a requirement
for all persons employed on some very small commercial vessels
(before completing 6 months of work at sea).

Restricted Operator Certificate (Maritime)
This radio operator course is approved by Industry Canada (Spectrum
Management) and is administered by Canadian Power Squadrons.
It is a requirement for persons using a radio telephone on vessels
that are not required by law to be fitted with a radio telephone.


Dates/Duration: Length of course is one day. Start dates to be announced.

Restricted Operator Certificate (Maritime-Commercial)
This radio operator course is approved by Industry Canada
(Spectrum Management). It is a requirement for persons using
a radio telephone on vessels that are required by law to be fitted
with a radio telephone. *A ship shall be equipped with one non-portable
VHF radiotelephone if the ship is o a closed construction ship of
more than 8 m (26.25ft) in length, and /or o a ship carrying
passengers that is engaged on a voyage any part of which is
- in a VHF coverage area, or
- more than five miles from shore; or
-a tow-boat.


Dates/Duration: Length of course is four days. A two day upgrade
to GMDSS is also available.

Sea Cook Course
This course is designed by Al Irving, who teaches the chef program
at the high school on Saltspring Island. Al has cooked on fishing
vessels, charter boats, oil rigs, deepsea ships and owned his
own restaurant. He is a past master at turning out great meals
in small moving spaces while doing 2 or 3 other things at the
same time. This course includes the FoodSafe Course.

General Seamanship Course
This course is designed for any person wishing to increase their
nautical and seamanship knowledge. Included are:
• Marine hazards
• Survival techniques
• Chartwork
• Radio Operation
• Navigation Safety
• Buoyage Successful completion gives the candidate a
Marine Emergency Duties Certificate (Transport Canada),
and a Restricted Operator Certificate (Maritime Compulsory).

Seamanship Course
This Course is designed for persons wishing to increase their
Boat-handling skills, it includes man-overboard exercises,
anchoring, tying up, knots and making landings.

Small Vessel Operator Proficiency Course
This covers minimum training of operators of commercial vessels,
other than tugs and fishing vessels, up to 5 gross tonnage engaged
on a near coastal, class 2 or a sheltered waters voyage, and for
fishing vessels up to 15 gross tonnage or 12 meters overall length
engaged on a near coastal, class 2 or a sheltered waters voyage.

Goals
To provide:
a) a basic understanding of the hazards of the marine environment
and the prevention of shipboard incidents;
b) the knowledge and skills to safely operate a small non-pleasure
vessel in near coastal and sheltered waters under normal operating
conditions.
c) additional knowledge on aids to navigation
