West Coast Aquatic Safaris based in Tofino, BC is seeking a full-time Captain and/or Skipper to operate vessels for its wildlife tours and private charters. Accommodation Available.

Principle Responsibilities:
• Safely operate 37-passenger catamaran & 12-passenger cabin cruiser
• Manage onboard marine crew and guests
• Provide guests with information about local wildlife, culture and geography
• Communicate with management and office
• General vessel maintenance
• Maintain vessel cleanliness and smooth operation
• Lead and participate in regular safety drills
• May be required to act as deckhand/naturalist on occasion

Qualifications:
• Limited 60 GT Masters or SVOP (Small Vessel Operator Proficiency Certificate)
• Domestic Vessel Safety (previously known as MED A1&A2) or STCW Basic Safety
• Marine Basic First Aid or Equivalent
• Marine Medical Certificate
• ROC-M or ROC-MC (Restricted Operator’s Certificate – Maritime Commercial)
• SVMO (Small Vessel Machinery Operator) is an asset

Desired Skills:
• Flexible schedule; willing to work full days
• Strong work ethic & ability to take initiative
• Very organized & reliable
• Leadership skills

SVOP Operator – Vancouver Island Whale Watch

Whale Watching Captain (SVOP)

Vancouver Island Whale Watch – Nanaimo, BC

Vancouver Island Whale Watch is currently inviting applications for the position of Skipper/Captain (SVOP) for daily excursions (3-4 hours). The successful candidates must be enthusiastic about the marine environment, must have experience boating on the Salish Sea, and must be willing and able to fully comply with Transport Canada legislation, local laws, and specific commercial whale watching regulations. They must show absolute attention to detail while also being comfortable with an ever-changing environment.

Role and Responsibilities

Captain responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Safe and efficient operation of the vessel and ensure the safety, health, and welfare of all crew and passengers onboard during whale watching tours.
  • Check the required supplies levels and equipment before and after tours.
  • Crew management and vessel inventory.
  • Compliance with Transport Canada policies, local laws, commercial whale watching regulations, and company rules.
  • Ensure the accurate execution of all COVID-19 onboard safety protocols.
  • Maintaining ship’s certificates and documentation by producing daily and monthly reports.
  • Produce accident / incident / injury / illness reports, if necessary.
  • Ensuring all machinery is operable and reporting defects.
  • Oversight and assistance with day-to-day general maintenance.

Qualification

  • Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP) or higher certification.
  • Restricted Operator Certificate-Maritime (ROC-M).
  • Small Domestic Vessel-Basic Safety (SDV-BS formerly called MED A3).
  • Transport Canada approved Marine First Aid

Preferred Skills:

  • Minimum of one year of experience driving boats with up to 12 passengers.
  • Local marine knowledge of the Salish Sea (Strait of Georgia, Gulf Islands, Howe Sound, etc).
  • Knowledge of local marine wildlife and the natural environment
  • Ability to learn a variety of job descriptions.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Very organized and reliable.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving.
  • Comfortable working outdoors.
  • Mechanical aptitude (Mechanical, Hydraulic, Electrical) is an asset.
  • Post-secondary background in Biology, Oceanography, or Environmental Studies is an asset.

We are a commercial fishing company looking for a Chief mate for a 27m Mid Water Trawler for the upcoming fishing season. We fish in the coastal waters of B.C. off the west coast of Vancouver Island based in Ucluelet.

This is a full-time position offering competitive wages, with a benefits package available.

The ideal candidate Certification:

  • Fishing Master 4 or higher, or a 150 Ton Mate certificate or higher
  • ROC-MC
  • Pass a Transport Canada marine medical
  • Standard first aid
  • Commercial Fisher’s Registration Card

Requirements:

  • Standing watch
  • Be able to communicate effectively with Captain and Crew Hauling and setting net
  • Work as a team with other crew members
  • Having commercial fishing or Trawl experience is an asset, but not required

  • Communicate with the front desk with regards to schedules and trips
  • Maintain cleanliness throughout the assigned boat
  • Fulfill extra tasks when not taking a Safari (i.e. Construction, maintenance & general upkeep throughout the facility)
