Job Description:

A Contract Captain and Deckhand are required for MV Forest Patrol. The Captain and Deckhand will be responsible for the navigation, manoeuvring, operation and security of the Ministry of Forests vessel the “MV Forest Patrol” and one or more small support vessel(s) to transport and accommodate the Ministry clients and Government employees as required.

Company Description: Ministry of Forests (MOF), North Island Central Coast District

The Vessel:

The MV Forest Patrol is a 54’ Canoe Cove, a crewed vessel, which sleeps 7 passengers and 2 crew. Supplied with the vessel is a large aluminum skiff with a 150hp motor, as well as numerous other pieces of equipment including two motorcycles, which can be requested (if passengers are capable of operation).

Our Ideal Candidate:

We are looking for a full-time contract captain and deckhand to lead the charge in managing and operating the MV Forest Patrol, ideal qualities include:

  • Experience managing a vessel; leading a crew, directing, and coordinating maintenance, and working with an operations team to prepare the vessel for safe operations
  • Ability to work at sea for extended periods in a variety of weather conditions and sea
  • Flexible & organized, with a proven ability to anticipate the needs of the
  • Experience operating a vessel in the North Island and Central Coast areas of British

Qualifications:

Licensed Captain holding the following qualifications/experience:

 

Engineer/Deckhand/Cook holding the following qualifications/experience

  • Is capable of repairing and maintaining all heavy and light-duty machinery and equipment onboard both vessels
  • Has a valid Food Safe Level 1 Certificate
  • Has experience in food preparations and catering
  • Has Small Vessel Operators Proficiency Training Course from a Transport Canada Approved Recognized Institution
  • Marine Emergency Duties – Domestic Vessel Safety (formerly MED A1 or A2) from a Transport Canada Approved Recognized Institution.

Duties:

The MV forest Patrol Captain (and deckhand) will be responsible for assisting and communicating with the operations manager to administer and manage the vessel in the overall preparation and readiness for the season, as well as operations during the sailing season. This includes the coordination and administration of winter season refit work, yearly service maintenance, ship certifications, and safety equipment). The head Captain will:

  • Ensure that the ship adheres to all associated Transport Canada regulations and meets the regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure that the vessel maintains all company standing orders and is sailing under company
  • Be expected to perform maintenance where needed and to best fit his or her skills as directed by the operations manager.
  • Ensure that all systems are in operational order and accompany the vessel as required during refit schedules and assist technical personnel in carrying out repairs and alterations; maintain an adequate level of supplies and routine parts.
  • Maintains and administers a preventative maintenance schedule for the

Other Duties Include:

  • Cater and provide three (3) full meals per person per day, plus assorted snacks and beverages for all Authorized Personnel aboard the MV Forest Patrol
  • Transport Ministry staff and contractors from the Ministry vessels to the shore and return as arranged by Ministry staff.
  • Maintain the radio communication schedule as per district safety procedures policy:
  • Perform safety checks on all ship’s systems prior to leaving port, regularly during the voyage and again at the conclusion of the trip. All checks, and their results, are to be noted in the Ship’s Log.
  • Provide laundry cleaning services for linens (sheets, towels) supplied by the
  • Provide security and monitoring services for the Vessel and associated equipment as per the definition of “Watchkeeping Day” when the vessel is moored and not in use
